Erectile Dysfunction
Over the past few years there have been major advances in the treatment of impotence and the majority of sufferers can now be treated effectively. The easiest and most popular form of treatment is oral prescription tablets. There are three different brands available, namely Viagra, Levitra and Cialis. These treatments have the same active ingredient but range in duration, potency and side-effects. The treatments can remain effective for between two and thirty six hours depending on which treatment you take.
Pfizer's Viagra, the first and most well known oral prescription treatment for impotence, is widely talked about and available to buy online from both legitimate and illegal sources. Due to its notoriety, buying Viagra is often the first choice of those seeking treatment for erectile dysfunction. While genuine Viagra has worked for millions of men the world over, it is important not to completely disregard Cialis and Levitra when making a decision about which treatment is best for your individual needs. Viagra, Cialis and Levitra work on the same principle – they all increase blood flow, thus enabling an erection with greater ease. The treatments do not act as an aphrodisiac and though they may work for several hours, you shouldn't have an erection for longer than you are sexually stimulated
The main difference between the treatments lies in the duration of their effectiveness. Viagra lasts for between 2 and 4 hours, Levitra for 3-5 and Cialis for up to 36 hours. Cialis is considered to be the ideal option for weekends or holidays. Though it is not as potent as genuine Viagra, the window of opportunity that Cialis offers can lead to a more natural and spontaneous experience and unlike the other treatments it is unaffected by the consumption of food. Levitra has the least reported side effects. The most important thing to remember is that if one of the treatments doesn’t work for you, another one might.
Hair Loss
Male Pattern Baldness is an issue which can cause considerable anxiety and lack of self-confidence in men. Though some men aren't troubled by the process of losing their hair, others may suffer great emotional distress when they begin to notice thinning on the scalp. Propecia is an oral prescription treatment designed to treat male pattern baldness.
Before explaining how Propecia works, it is first useful to explain what causes male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness is the most common form of hair loss and you are probably very familiar with this type of hair loss already. It represents close to 95% of all cases of hair loss in men. And about half of all men experience male pattern hair loss by age 50.
It is typically a progressive condition and often begins with a receding hairline, slow balding at the crown, or both. Left untreated, the hair loss will likely continue. By the time you may notice your hair loss, 50% of your hair may be gone. Scientists believe that male pattern baldness is inherited from either side of the family and that a chemical called dihydrotestosterone - more commonly referred to as DHT - is a key factor in hair loss. DHT is a substance in the body that can shrink the hair follicle until it no longer produces visible hair.
Propecia is a prescription treatment which inhibits the production of DHT, which in most men will bring the level below the hair growth threshold. As long as the patient is taking the Propecia pill, the level will remain reduced and the hair loss will be reduced or stopped. In some cases some of the hairs will even grow back out.
Propecia was developed to treat mild to moderate male pattern hair loss on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area (middle front of head) in MEN ONLY. There is not sufficient evidence that Propecia works for receding hairlines at the temples. If Propecia has not worked for you within 12 months, further treatment is unlikely to be of benefit. Propecia can only work over the long term if you continue taking it. If you stop taking Propecia, you will likely lose any hair you have gained within 12 months of stopping treatment.
Weight Loss
Weight loss treatments, diets plans, diet pills, diet secrets, get slim, get in shape, lose weight – these are just some of the most searched terms on the internet. Obesity is becoming an ever increasing problem in western society and many people are desperately seeking answers and treatments online. Being overweight can amount not only to self image problems but also to serious medical issues. While seeking information and treatment is an important step to a new and healthier lifestyle, if you are overweight the first thing to acknowledge is that there's no quick fix. Set realistic goals and always bear in mind that it is a question of balance - to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you're consuming.
While, dietary changes and physical exercise will always remain the most important factors for maintaining weight loss, there are some treatments available that have been proven to aid weight loss in those with a high Body Mass Index (BMI). Here is some basic information on two such prescription treatments;
Xenical: Xenical works by blocking some of the fat that you eat from being absorbed by your body. By consuming fewer calories, your body will automatically tap into its fat stores and use them for the energy it needs. Xenical is a popular oral first line treatment for obesity due to is wide suitability, success rate and low side effects. It is suitable for those with a BMI of 27 and above
Acomplia: A new prescription weight loss drug containing the active ingredient rimonabant. Rimonabant blocks CB1 receptors and so reduces cravings for food and helps decrease appetite and control hunger. The result is that patients will experience the feeling of being full easier thus wanting to eat less than normally. Acomplia is only suitable for people with a BMI of 30 and above
Quit Smoking
Smoking is widely acknowledged to be one of the hardest habits to break free off. Nicotine is widely recognised to be one of the most addictive of all drugs. So addictive that statistics reveal that typically 95 per cent of smokers relapse within the first year.
Everybody knows of the grave health problems that smoking has a high chance of leading too, the ever increasing expense of cigarettes and the anti smoking feeling that is becoming more and more common. Long gone are the days when smoking was glorified in the media and considered glamorous. Smoking in public places is being banned in country after country and smoking is increasingly being viewed as a pointless and dangerous habit. Everyone is aware of the reasons to quit but nevertheless giving up smoking can prove very difficult without the right assistance. A variety of aids to stop smoking have been developed in the last few years. Here is brief account of some of the more popular approaches to quitting smoking.
Champix (varenicline) is a non-nicotine prescription-only pill which provides relief from cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Champix works on the pleasure centre of the brain to cut the satisfaction smokers get from a cigarette. This means that if people have a lapse and smoke a cigarette, they will find it less enjoyable and are more likely to continue to quit.
Nicotine Replacement Therapy. There are several nicotine replacement products currently available over-the-counter in the UK. There is not much difference in how well the different types of NRT work. Personal preference usually determines which one to use. Non Prescription: Nicotine gum, Nicotine patches, Nicotine tablets / lozenges. Prescription Only: Nicotine inhaler, Nicotine nasal spray
Hypnosis: Smoking cessation is one of the most popular medical uses of hypnosis.
Acupuncture: Acupuncture is believed to help trigger the release of endorphins (naturally-occurring pain relief substances) that allow the body to relax.
Behavioral Therapy: Because so much of nicotine addiction is related to the habitual behaviors (the “rituals”) involved in smoking, learning to change the automatic nature of those behaviors is often a standard approach to a smoking cessation program.
Influenza
Influenza or the flu, is a viral infection which can strike at any time of year. However, in the UK, autumn and winter are the most active seasons for the flu virus. These are also the seasons when migratory birds bring with them an increased threat of avian bird flu. The flu can be a serious illness, particularly for mature populations aged 50 and older, and those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and asthma.
The main way that influenza viruses are spread is from person to person in respiratory droplets of coughs and sneezes. (This is called "droplet spread.") This can happen when droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person are propelled through the air and deposited on the mouth or nose of people nearby. Influenza viruses may also be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets on another person or an object and then touches their own mouth or nose (or someone else’s mouth or nose) before washing their hands.
The flu is a virus so antibiotics are of no use. The best way to treat the symptoms of flu is by getting plenty of rest, fluids and paracetamol - to lower a high temperature and relieve aches. The flu is preventable and treatable with the antiviral medication Tamiflu. It works by stopping the virus sticking onto cells in the upper respiratory tract.
Tamiflu is a flu antiviral drug that can treat the flu or prevent infection with flu viruses. For treatment, Tamiflu should be started within 48 hours of getting sick. For prevention, Tamiflu is 70% to 90% effective in preventing infection. If you develop flu-like symptoms (usually high fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose and muscle aches), or are exposed to the flu before you get a flu vaccine, a health care professional will decide whether you should take Tamiflu.
Low Libido
Medical surveys reveal that approximately 43% of all adult women suffer from various forms of sexual dysfunction. Although male erectile dysfunction gets far more press (in part due to the popularity of treatments such as Pfizer's Viagra), female sexual dysfunction and low libido are just as serious and common.
The definition given by specialists to female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is the consistent or inconsistent lack of sexual fantasies, desire and/or initiative in order to perform sexual intercourse, a fact that leads to a state of personal distress or difficult interpersonal relationships.
The condition is not purely mechanical, but an interaction of psychological, hormonal and possibly physiological factors.
Causes of lack of libido in women
As is the case with men, lack of desire in women can be of either physical or psychological origin. While there is considerable evidence that testosterone in women can increase sex drive after menopause, female sexual desire is not totally about hormones. A growing body of evidence tells us that sex in the right emotional context is important to most women and there are cases where women say no to sex because they feel unloved, ignored or simply exhausted. In these cases the dysfunction is due to a fault in the relationship rather than anything medical.
Physical causes include:
- Anaemia, which is very common in women because of iron loss during periods
- Alcoholism/Drug abuse
- Major diseases such as diabetes
- Loss of libido often happens after childbirth
- Prescribed drugs, particularly tranquillisers
- Hyperprolactinaemia - a rare disorder in which the pituitary gland is overactive
Psychological causes include:
- Depression
- Stress and overwork
- Anxiety
- Past sexual abuse or rape
- Serious relationship problems with your partner
Medicines for female loss of desire
In 2007 a testosterone skin patch called Intrinsa became available in the UK. Intrinsa is a clear patch worn on the abdomen. It delivers a low dose of testosterone, a naturally occurring hormone in men and women that is a key mediator of sexual desire.
This patch is only currently licensed on the NHS for women who have had an early surgically-induced menopause. Obviously, this is quite a small number of women. Intrinsa can be prescribed privately for other women with low libido but it must be remembered that Intrinsa is aimed at a specific group of women. It is not a desire booster and it is not designed for women who are pre-menopausal or who have not had a hysterectomy.
